  The Art of
      HOWARD TERPNING

Howard Terpning was born November 5th, 1927 in Oak Park Illinois, birthplace of Ernest Hemingway. His father worked for the Northwestern Railroad. His mother was an interior decorator. As a boy he was torn between two ambitions: to be an artist or to be a pilot. Howard attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Art. Howard worked in New York City for awhile and than got a chance to document the Vietnam War as a Marine Corp Major. Howard did advertising art and movie posters for awhile also. In the summer of 1974 Howard started painting what he wanted and one of his first paintings was Sioux Chief Gall. In 1976 Howard gave up commercial work and moved to Tucson to become a Western painter. In two short years he became one of the giants in his field.
